Tubes and Adnoids

On Hudsons actual birthday he had his 2 year check up at the doctor. The doctor asked when looking into his ears, "You know he has 2 ear infections right?" Um...no, we didn't know that. Since we don't have the microscope thingy that you have, we can't really just check whenever we want. Well any ways, he had some pretty bad ones, but he never reacted to them so we had no idea. The doctor proceeded to tell us that he is behind on his speech most likely because of the infections and his tubes need to be removed. Looking at the history he has struggled with infections his whole life minus about 6 months off the record..Which means when we debated on taking him to the doctor but didn't, he most likely had infections and he just dealt with them. So from November 8 to December 21, Hudson had constant ear infections that we know of. Pretty sure he has always had them and they've never really gone away when he did have them. On December 21 Hudson got tubes put into his ears and his adnoids removed (they're by the tonsils). The tubes procedure takes about 15-20 minutes while the adnoids take about 15-20 minutes. Well...he was in surgery for an hour. The anesteciologist had a hard time finding a vein so that took a couple minutes to put him to sleep, than it took the doctor about 20 minutes to just get the liquid out of his ear. He says the "fluid" was a paste and glue type substance. They call it "glue ear". I asked if this was having an effect on his hearing and he said "absolutely, and it's been like he has been under water this whole time while this fluid has kept building up in his ears." Man do we feel like bad parents, but how were we supposed to know that. So here we go. The recovery went well for the most part. Day 1 and 2 were good. Day 3 he was really clingy, not eating, and by 8:00 at night he threw up his pain killers and had a 102.2 fever. We gave him a cool bath to cool him down and tried just regular tylenol instead of the prescribed one that made him puke. He hasn't slept through the night for a few weeks and that night he did for the most part so that was good. This was Thursday leading into Christmas Eve. Thank goodness he was better for the most part by Christmas.
Hudson has been such a good sport through all of this. Since the surgery he has seemed happier and seems to listen better. His speech is still behind, but that will change in time. Maybe we'll have to go to a speech therapist but we'll see. He is repeating words way more already, and is jabbering all the time. Not like he didn't before, it's just more now. I'm such amazed at how Hudson reacts to things and doesn't let pain or anything get to him. I've had ear aches and they're horrible. He's had them most of his life and he's still be so happy and playful. I'm sure because it has been normal for him though so he just dealt with it. It's just amazing to me. Grant and I are so thankful he is in our lives and we wouldn't change it for anything.
Grant took pictures of Hudson on his phone of pre and post surgery. There are some cute ones of him in his hospital get-up. I'll try to get them on here. They're so cute.

Glad everything worked out... kids are resiliant. All parents have had moments like that, we had a "huh, your arm hurts, hey, you're fine..." and it was broken... ya, stellar Mommy moment.
